At a young age, Taras Stepanenko moved with his family from Donetsk Oblast to Zaporizhya, where he started playing football. He played for the local side Torpedo. From 2007 to 2010, he was in the ranks of Metalurh Zaporizhya, being spotted by the coaches of Ukraine U21 team and Shakhtar Donetsk.
The young midfielder started playing for the Orange-and-Blacks in May 2010. He made his first competitive start in the Ukrainian Super Cup tie against Tavriia, with Shakhtar claiming a 7-1 win.
Taras has a defensive midfielder role and carries out a great amount of work in every match.
Stepanenko is one of the key midfielders of Shakhtar and Ukraine national team.
